Champions and top scorers in the Africa Cup of Nations 2022

The flag of the champions Senegal
The final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2022 was played yesterday and a big congratulations to Senegal who won the tournament for the first time in the country's history! Senegal played Egypt in the final and after a goalless match after 120 minutes played, the match had to be decided on penalties. Senegal superstar Sadio Mané was the player who got the honour of wining the gold medal for Senegal when he scored the final penalty, after Egypt missed two and Senegal one previously, which meant that Egypt's big star Mohamed Salah and Mané's club mate in Liverpool were not allowed to shoot the last penalty since the match was already decided.

The bronze in the tournament went to the host country Cameroon. After being knocked out in the semis against Egypt on penalties, they instead won in the bronze match on penalties against Burkina Faso. The final was a somewhat sleepy story, but this match was all the more dramatic. Cameroon was down 3-1 but two late goals in the 85th and 87th minutes from the tournament's top scorer (more about him below) took the match to extra time and penalties. Once there, Cameroon kept their cool best and won a well-deserved bronze medal in the end.

The top scorer of the Africa Cup of Nations - Vincent Aboubakar!

However, the tournament's number on top scorer did not come from Senegal or Egypt. Instead, it was the host country Cameroon's striker Vincent Aboubakar who scored most goals in the tournament - 8 goals in total. Aboubakar, playing in Turkish Besiktas on a daily basis, scored both goals in the 2-1 victory in the opening match against Burkina Faso. He followed this up with three more goals in the group stage, then one goal in the round of 16 when they knocked out the tournament's biggest surprise Comoros and ended the tournament by scoring two goals again against Burkina Faso in the bronze match. As icing on the cake, it was also he who got to score the last penalty in the bronze match, so on the whole a very worthy winner of the top scorer title even if he was not allowed to win gold with his Cameroon.

Other top scoring players

If there was any team that impressed in the tournament scoring-wise, it was Cameroon. This They did not only have the top scorer winner housed in their team, but they also had the runner-up Karl Toko Ekambi in their team. Toko Ekambi scored 5 goals in this tournament, which was not entirely surprising as he has showed good form for his Lyon this season. Among other things, he is in a split lead in the top scorer table in Europa League.

Sadio Mané
After the two mentioned Cameroonians, it was a quartet of players who scored 3 goals each. One of these was Sadio Mané, who somehow still feels like the winner of the tournament given that he did score the decisive penalty in the final. Other players on three goals were Gabadinho Mhango (Malawi), Ibrahima Koné (Mali) and the Moroccan Sofiane Boufal.

So what about the tournament's biggest star Mohamed Salah? Salah "only" scored two goals in the tournament. He did still lead his Egypt to the final so even though we were many who expected more goals from him, it was still a clearly acceptable tournament from him and Egypt's side. He would probably have liked to have had a chance to decide the final with the last penalty that he was never allowed to take though ...
