Strongest Candidates to Win the Top Scorer Title in Sweden's Allsvenskan 2026

The first round of the Allsvenskan has already been played, and Hammarby's Paulos Abraham got off to a flying start by scoring a hat-trick as Hammarby convincingly beat defending champions Mjällby 3-0. Abraham was already one of the favourites to win the top scorer title before the season began, and his fine start naturally makes him an even stronger contender.

However, we should begin by mentioning last season's top scorer standings, where we had a shared win between Djurgården's August Priske and GAIS' Ibrahim Diabate, who both scored 18 goals each. Both of these players have, however, left their Allsvenskan clubs for other leagues, and the same goes for Sirius' Leo Walta, who finished fourth in the top scorer standings with 16 goals.

Predicting who will win the top scorer title in the Allsvenskan is often harder than in many of the bigger leagues in Europe, and this is because if a player overperforms and scores a lot of goals, there is a big risk that player will be bought by a club in a bigger league during the summer. So even if they go into the summer break, which comes before the World Cup in the USA/Mexico/Canada this summer, as clear leaders, it becomes almost impossible to win since the player only plays half a season if they leave. This is also something we are trying to ignore here, even though it is difficult in any case, which we will get to.

The strongest candidates to win the top scorer title in 2026

We begin with the absolute strongest candidates and list and rank the five strongest names.

1. Paulos Abraham, Hammarby

We can admit that if it had not been for his extremely strong start against Mjällby, we would not have ranked Paulos Abraham first, but it is hard to overlook the strong start both he and Hammarby produced. With that said, we still have to raise a warning flag here, as Abraham has not been a major and consistent goalscorer in previous seasons.

Last season he managed 8 goals, which is not particularly impressive, but the fact is that in addition to his hat-trick in the opening round, he also scored four goals in six cup matches during the spring, which still suggests that he has learned to find the net more often.

2. Erik Botheim, Malmö

Malmö had a downright poor season last year relative to expectations, and the same applies to Norwegian striker Erik Botheim. However, his season was ruined by injuries, and the fact that he did not score a single Allsvenskan goal in his 8 matches does not necessarily have to mean that much.

He scored Malmö's only goal in their opening match against Örgryte, a 1-1 away draw, and he scored four goals in four cup matches, which gives him an average of one goal per match this year. If Malmö can get their play in order, which does not feel impossible considering the talent pool they have in the squad, and Botheim can stay injury-free, then he is one of the strongest candidates to become top scorer.

3. Max Fenger, IFK Göteborg

IFK Göteborg's Danish striker Max Fenger showed at times last season that he is a very strong goalscorer. He got off to a flying start with five goals in the first five matches, but then became a little more inconsistent and finished on 12 goals in total.

In IFK's away opener against Elfsborg, he started on the bench as he has had some injury problems and played only 21 minutes in their 0-2 defeat. The feeling, however, is that Fenger has plenty of goals in him and can, together with the rest of IFK Göteborg, have an even better season this time around.

4. Jacob Bergström, Mjällby

Mjällby won the Allsvenskan in style last season but had a wide spread of goalscorers, as many defenders and midfielders contributed a lot of the goals, with Elliot Stroud leading the way on 9 goals. Jacob Bergström scored only 5 goals, and the fact that he has never scored more than 9 goals in an Allsvenskan season really suggests that he is not a major goalscorer.

Now, however, both Mjällby and Bergström have shown good form in the cup, where they have reached the final, and despite the disappointment against Hammarby in the opening round, we believe both Mjällby and Bergström will improve significantly going forward. Whether he shows enough form to reach double figures remains to be seen, but it does not feel impossible at all.

5. Kristian Lien, Djurgården

When Dane August Priske left Djurgården for Birmingham in January, the club also lost 34.6% of all the goals they scored last season. To remedy that, they have signed Norwegian forward Kristian Lien, and as Priske's replacement, we give him fifth place on this list.

Last season he was loaned out from Groningen to Norwegian side Hamarkameratene, where he scored 11 goals, which must still be seen as a very fine return for a team in the bottom half. It is always tricky to come to a new club, but if he has a short adjustment period, he could become a strong goalscorer for Djurgården already this season.

Other strong challengers

As we have already mentioned, the Allsvenskan is very hard to predict when it comes to the top scorer title, and even though we see our first five candidates as some of the most likely winners, there is no shortage of challengers.

Robbie Ure, Sirius

Scotsman Robbie Ure is the player we believe is closest to our top candidates. He scored 11 goals for Sirius last season, his first season at the club, and the fact is that Sirius are one of the clubs many experts see as a bit of a "dark horse" in the title race. The fact that he scored in the 3-0 opening-round win over Degerfors, and has also scored five goals in five matches during the spring, means he deserves to be listed as the first challenger to the top five.

Nahir Besara, Hammarby

If you exclude the players who have left the Allsvenskan ahead of this season, Nahir Besara is the player who remains and scored the most goals last season. In total he scored 17 goals, along with 8 assists, so of course he has to be mentioned here as well. You could therefore argue that he should be one of the very strongest names, but it should be remembered that Besara is now 35 years old and that he had an exceptional season last year. Our guess is that Besara will continue to be an incredibly important attacking force for Hammarby, but that his goal tally will be slightly lower and his assists more numerous. We could of course be wrong about that, and if he manages 17 goals again this year, he could very well win the top scorer title.

Zadok Yohanna, AIK

AIK's 18-year-old Nigerian Zadok Yohanna has emerged as one of the big headline names in this year's Allsvenskan after impressing greatly both in the cup and in AIK's 2-1 opening win over Halmstad, where he not only scored the winning goal but also hit the post and delivered an all-round outstanding performance. However, we see two possible scenarios here, and we are making a small exception from our attempt to ignore the fact that players can leave in the summer window. Either he is currently riding a huge wave of confidence and is overperforming somewhat, which means his incredible form will level off and his goalscoring will drop a little, though he can of course still have a very fine season, or the success continues and he is then bought in the summer by a much bigger club in a bigger league. But if he continues the way he has started the season and stays at AIK, he is absolutely one of the names who can win the top scorer title.

Samuel Salter, GAIS

GAIS surprised many with their fine football last season and finished third in the Allsvenskan, largely thanks to Ivorian Ibrahim Diabate, who scored 18 goals, a full 40% of all the team's goals, which gave him a shared top scorer title. Right now, however, Diabate is on loan at Deportivo Alavés and unavailable for GAIS, and as his replacement they have brought in Canadian Samuel Salter. This 25-year-old may not be a particularly well-known name, but he was regarded as a major striking talent when he was younger and he performed very well in the Canadian Premier League last season, scoring 24 goals in 35 competitive matches. If the step up to the Allsvenskan is not too big, he could be a bargain signing for GAIS and there could be plenty of goals already this year, but he obviously still has a lot to prove.

Adrian Svanbäck, Häcken

Adrian Svanbäck is our final name on the list. The 21-year-old Finn, though raised in Sweden, scored 5 goals in 13 Allsvenskan matches already last season after being signed from Helsingborg during the summer. That means he is already settled in the Allsvenskan, and he has started the season very well with first three goals in three cup matches and then one of the goals in Häcken's 2-2 draw in the opening round against Brommapojkarna. He will hardly continue with that scoring rate all season, but we can quite certainly expect to see many goals from the Finn this season.
Johan Sundin is a Swedish writer who was a promising soccer player but had to stop his career before it took off due to injuries. Nowadays he writes about everything possible in football and he has an extra passion for deadly strikers, players who have no exceptional technique but are always right and are merciless when the chance arises. Favorites over the years are strikers like Jürgen Klinsmann, Gabriel Batistuta, Ronaldo (the fat one) and Didier Drogba.
