Serhou Guirassy - Bundesliga's new super striker

Ahead of this season, not too many people knew who the 27-year-old Serhou Guirassy was, but after his start in the Bundesliga this season, many people have opened their eyes to him. After scoring a hat-trick for his Stuttgart side at the weekend, his second of the season, as they overturned a 0-1 deficit to a 3-1 win against Wolfsburg, he has now scored 13 goals in the opening seven rounds of the Bundesliga. With this, he has broken Robert Lewandowski's old record with the greatest number of goals in the first seven rounds.

Stuttgart - Bundesliga's big surprise team

Stuttgart is a classic German team that, among other things, has five Bundesliga titles, the most recently won in the 2006/2007 season, but has had a few bad seasons in recent years. Last season they finished third last but managed to stay in Bundesliga after a qualifying win against Hamburg, and the season before that they finished fourth last and only avoided the qualifying games on goal difference.

This season, however, it is something completely different. They crushed Bochum in the opener with 5-0, after two goals from Guirassy, but then got a more expected loss after 1-5 against RB Leipzig in the second round (the consolation goal was scored by Guirassy). But after that, they have lined up five straight wins and are currently second in the league, one point behind Bayer Leverkusen.

And the fact that Stuttgart has started the season so fantastic is largely attributed to Serhou Guirassy. As already mentioned, he has scored 13 goals so far, five goals more than Harry Kane himself, and accounted for 59.1% of his team's goals in the league. In the fourth round he scored a hat-trick when they beat Mainz away 3-1, and this weekend came, as already mentioned, his second hat-trick.

So, who is this striker that has started this season with a staggering average of 1.86 goals per game? Serhou Guirassy was born in France and was a very talented goalscorer early in his career, for example he scored 10 goals in 20 games in France's U19 and U20 national teams.

He made his professional debut in the French Ligue 2 for his first club Laval in October 2013 but it was not until the following season that he scored his first goal at senior level against Le Havre in December 2014. Ahead of the 2015/2016 season he was signed by Lille and made his debut for the club in Ligue 1 against Paris Saint-Germain in the league premiere. However, the success did not come and after the new year he was loaned to the then Ligue 2 team Auxerre where he scored 8 goals in 16 games.

Although Lille did not appreciate his services, he was still considered a great attacking talent, something that German Köln noticed and signed him. But there was no success in Germany either, instead it was only in the 2019/2020 season that things started to loosen up for him when he then again played in Ligue 1 for the small team Amiens. He then scored 9 goals in 23 games, but it didn't help Amiens who still was relegated.

However, Guirassy got to stay in Ligue 1 as Rennes believed in him and signed him for 15 million euros. In Rennes, he established himself as a consistent goal scorer with 10 league goals in the 2020/2021 season and 9 league goals in the 2021/2022 season.

In September 2022, he went to Stuttgart on loan and in the 2022/2023 season, a season in which he scored 11 league goals and was thus the team's top scorer. Given that Stuttgart was a bottom club, it can be considered a very fine goal result, which Stuttgart also thought, considering they chose to sign him permanently for this season. Something they probably don't regret today.

Serhou Guirassy dissed France and chose Guinea

Serhou Guirassy's parents are originally from Guinea and despite successfully representing the French national team at youth level, he chose to play for Guinea at senior level and made his debut in 2022 in a friendly against South Africa. He has up to today played seven caps for Guinea and scored two goals, his first coming against Egypt in June this year in an African Championship qualifier.

Finally...

And once again, his goal numbers this season must be considered quite spectacular. He scored 10 goals in the first five rounds of the season and scored in every one of these games. The only blemish on the record was that he went goalless in the sixth round against his old club Köln, but bounced back straight away by scoring a hat-trick against Wolfsburg in the following round. Whether this 27-year-old can continue to maintain this level in the long run remains to be seen, but if he does, he will likely be playing in a bigger club in the near future.
