Season start 2022/2023 in the Austrian Fußball-Bundesliga tomorrow

Tomorrow, July 22, the Austrian Fußball-Bundesliga kicks off the 2022/2023 season when Salzburg takes on Austria Wien at home and in this article, we will take a look at the candidates to win the top scorer, or Golden Boot if like, title this new season.

As for the league title, it was, as usual, an easy championship win for Salzburg last season. With only two losses in total during the season, they won by a margin of 15 points down to Sturm Graz. That Salzburg are the favourites to win this season as well is no surprise and the fact is that if they manage to win this season as well, it will be their 10th straight league title.

Who will win the Golden Boot title 2022/2023 in the Fußball-Bundesliga, Austria?

We can start by mentioning that last season's top scorer was the German shooting star Karim Adeyemi, scoring 19 goals for his Salzburg. Borussia Dortmund were quick to secure Adeyemi after they sold Erling Braut Haaland so he will have a hard time defending his title this season. Second in the top scorer list, Giacomo Vrioni in WSG Swarovski Tirol, does not play in the league this season either.

Salzburg

Salzburg's striker - who will be their top scorer?

Because Salzburg are as superior as they are in this league, it is usually from this club that the Golden Boot winner can be found nowadays so we start by looking at their strikers to find candidates.

Noah Okafor is a 21-year-old Swiss who in the shadow of Adeyemi had a great last season and scored 9 goals. With a little more room for him up front and if he is rewarded with a regular place in the attack, it is not impossible that he will really flourish this season.

Roko Simic is an 18-year-old Croatian who last season was on loan to Salzburg's farm team Liefering in the Austrian second division, where he scored 19 goals and helped Liefering to a second place in the league. He is the son of the old defender Dario Simic who made 100 international appearances for Croatia, so he has som good football genes in him. Whether Roko Simic will be loaned out again or get the chance in Salzburg this season remains to be seen, but Salzburg has an ability to deliver young top strikers and maybe it's Simic's turn this season.

Junior Adamu (or Chukwubuike Adamu as he is also called) is another young promising striker Salzburg has. This 21-year-old was also out on loan last season, in his case to Swiss St Gallen, and he scored 6 goals in the Swiss top league. He has already made his debut in the Austrian national team.

19-year-old Slovenian Benjamin Sesko scored a total of 21 goals in the 2020/2021 season when he was loaned to Liefering in the second league. He was rewarded for this with a place in Salzburg's squad last season and he scored 5 goals in 24 matches.

Salzburg has also made a new acquisition on the forward side in the form of Brazilian Fernando, who most recently came from Shakhtar Donetsk. This 23-year-old has previously also been loaned out to Sporting in the Portuguese league, so it is obvious that there is potential in this player. Last season 2021/2022 in Ukrainian Premier-Liha, he scored 5 goals in 7 matches before the war interrupted the game in the league and he will be interesting to follow this season.

In summary, it can be said that Salsburg has a plethora of promising young strikers. This makes it a bit hard to know who will be a regular player when the competition is this fierce, and it is therefore not so easy to guess who is the main candidate to become Salzburg's main goal scorer either. Whoever it is, will surely be one of the challengers to the top scorer title.

Other candidates

As mentioned, we usually find the top scorer of the league in Salzburg, but maybe the fierce competition between the young players there means that we find the winner in another team instead.

Guido Burgstaller is a hot new signing for Rapid Wien. The now 33-year-old Austrian left Rapid Wien in 2014 for Cardiff but has since scored plenty of goals in Germany, first in Nürnberg, then in Schalke 04 and most recently in St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga, last season he scored 18 goals there. Even though he is starting to get a bit old, but of course have gained a lot of routine, he is one of the hotter candidates to become top scorer this season.

Sturm Graz Jakob Jantscher was third in the top scorer list last season with his 14 goals. This 33-year-old is an experienced goal scorer but rarely reaches any level higher than these 14 goals. He must still be mentioned as one of the candidates this season as the competition is weak.

24-year-old Marco Grüll in Rapid Wien is an Austrian national team player who is a stable goal scorer. He scored 8 goals last season and 11 when he played in the Ried season before that.
